Toxic chemicals and heavy metals are now ubiquitous in our environment. Greater than 4 billion pounds of chemicals are released into the environment yearly; most of them unstudied, and many of them recognized carcinogens, hormone disruptors or neurotoxins. Water quality, toxic waste in the ground, toxins on and in our food, and outdoor and indoor air quality are all concerns for health.
Poor environmental quality accounts for 25% of all preventable world illness. Environmental illness in US children costs $55 billion per year. This includes lead poisoning, asthma, birth defects, cancer, autism, ADHD and other developmental disabilities. Chemical and heavy metal exposure has been linked to Parkinson’s, chronic lung disease, autoimmune disease, arrhythmias, hormonal illnesses such as endometriosis, miscarriage and fetal death, reduced fertility, congenital defects, kidney disease, cancers, neuropathies and more.
The diet is a major source of toxic exposure. Contamination by microorganisms, pesticides, residues from food processing, prescription drugs and industrial wastes can be found in foods. Some of the toxic heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium) have been released/redistributed into the environment at potentially dangerous levels and can find their way into the diet as well. Even if all heavy metal production were to stop today, however, enough heavy metals have been released into our environment to cause chronic poisoning and numerous neurological diseases for generations to come. There are presently 600,000 toxic waste contamination sites in the United States alone, according to the U.S. Congressional Office of Technology Assessment.
With the government is doing little or moving very slowly to protect the public from the hazards of heavy metals and the majority of physicians have not been taught to recognize or deal with chronic toxic exposure, it is up to individuals to take measures to protect themselves. According to conventional medicine, there is nothing a person can do to address aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, or nickel exposure, aside from avoiding known sources. Sodium Ascorbate—the buffered form of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for detoxification in the body, particularly in the liver, as antioxidants help cells neutralize free radicals that cause cellular damage. As an antioxidant, vitamin C scavenges free radicals and protects the tissues from oxidative stress. Much of the damage produced by toxic metals and chemicals stems from the proliferation of oxidative free radicals they cause. Vitamin C is also a vital cofactor to the formation of collagen, and necessary for tissue healing.
Methyl-selenocysteine—selenium is required to activate various key enzymes, including the antioxidant gluthione peroxidase and manganese SOD. Many forms of selenium can be toxic at higher doses. Methyl-selenocysteine is found naturally in vegetables such as garlic, leeks and onions. It does not accumulate in the body and is considered to be non-toxic. It is easily converted to methylselenol which has been demonstrated to be an effective anti-cancer form of selenium through apoptosis and inhibiting angiogenesis. Studies suggest that selenium binds ot mercury, potentially reducing the biological availability of mercury.
Calcium Di-sodium EDTA—the synthetic amino acid ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid is an effective and widely studied chelating agent. It was first introduced in the US in 1948 as a treatment for lead poisoning. The FDA has approved IV EDTA chelation as a treatment for lead poisoning. Studies have also showed IV EDTA to be effective in reducing cardiovascular disease. Oral EDTA chelation is much slower acting because only 4% to 18% of an oral EDTA dose is absorbed. Taken on a daily or frequent basis, oral EDTA has been shown to reduce heavy metal toxicity and calcification. EDTA is not a potent remover of mercury, however, other ingredients in this formula have been shown to reduce mercury load in the body.
N-Acetyl Cysteine—a potent antioxidant that protects against harmful toxins. Anyone who smokes, uses acetaminophen (Tylenol), or gets chemotherapy should be using NAC consistently. It promotes urinary excretion of methylmercury. NAC is also a vital antioxidant. Besides providing toxin protection, NAC is a selective immune system enhancer, improving symptoms and preventing recurrences of common lung-related illnesses. NAC also helps the body convert and synthesize glutathione, which is found in every cell. Glutathione scavenges free radicals, enhances cellular function, and helps the liver remove chemicals. It also improves the ability of lung phagocytes to be effective in destroying bacteria and cellular debris.
L-Methionine—a sulfur-containing amino acid, methionine is a powerful antioxidant, is an active chelator (used in treating acetaminophen, radiation side effects and copper poisoning), is responsible for the production of collagen, may boost your immune system, assists the body in utilizing selenium and zinc, helps form glutathione and SAMe. It promotes glutathione production and encourages phase II detoxification pathways in the liver.
Modified Citrus Pectin—a soluble dietary fiber derived from orange peel composed of galacturonic acid, galactose, glucose, rhammose, and arabinose. promotes healthy urinary excretion of mercury, arsenic, cadmium, lead and tin without altering excretion of other minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and selenium. The polysaccharide components have been shown in research to shift T cell balance to favor Natural Killer cell activation, enhancing the immune system.
Zeolite—a volcanic mineral (clinoptilolite) that captures and adsorbs cesium, an element with several radioactive isotopes that often contaminate soils and water following nuclear disasters such as Fukushima and Chernobyl. There is some evidence that it may also remove toxins such as aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury and tin. It does not seem to remove “beneficial” minerals such as calcium, zinc and potassium, etc.
Dandelion root—though there is not a lot of science behind it, traditional herbalists and naturopaths have long touted dandelion root to assist in detoxifying the liver and gallbladder. Studies do show it may aid digestion, improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels and act as an anti-inflammatory, but the research is still in its infancy.
Milk Thistle—contains silymarin, a compound found to limit the entry of hepatotoxins, donate sulfhydryl groups for detoxification, and increase hepatic glutathione by over 35%. In the liver it reduces fat peroxidation and fibrous tissue formation, supports a normal immune and inflammatory response, promotes protein synthesis and tissue regeneration, and supports glucuronidation and glutathione levels.
Alpha Lipoic Acid—both water and fat soluble, it supports glutathione metabolism, helps regenerate antioxidant vitamins C and E, and helps maintain the ratio of reduced-to-oxidized CoQ 10 in the mitochondria. ALA promotes the biliary excretion of inorganic mercury and may help regulate heavy metal induced oxidative stress. It stabilizes NF-kappaB transcription and may help support healthy immune functions in the body.
Sodium Alginate—an extract from brown algae known for its ability to bind to strontium, lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, barium and aluminum for removal from the body.
L-Glycine—an important amino acid for relaxation, detoxification and normal muscle function. It plays a key role in phase II liver detoxification by direct effect on toxin elimination and via its effect on increasing glutathione. Glycine is necessary for the production of healthy DNA and RNA. It is one of the 3 amino acids (with cysteine and methionine) needed for the synthesis of creatine, which supplies energy to muscle and nerve cells. It is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS along with GABA, and may improve memory retrieval. Glycine also helps regulate the synthesis of the bile acid that digests fats, and regulates glucose utilization for energy.
